Centaur and serpent relief carving
Reclaimed welsh slate
600mm diameter x 45mm
This piece is of my own design based on a small carving that my grandfather carved for my grandmother 75 years ago. My grandfather was not a stone carver, as far as I know he only ever carved this one piece that he carved using a sharpened screwdriver. I decided to carve my own version. His was in a soft cream coloured limestone, a rectangular piece. It depicts a centaur fighting a serpent surrounded by foliage. In my version I carved it in slate, within a circle rather than a rectangle and double the size of his.
