I had the immense privilege of having my design picked to create a new artwork for the Drapers Hall in London for the worshipful Company of Drapers. In early 2021 there wasy a competitionto come up with a design for to create a carved piece in celebration of the tercentenary of the death of Grinling Gibbons. Gibbons is one of the most well know carvers in British history, so to have the opportunity to honour him especially in such a beautiful location as the Drapers Hall was an incredible opportunity.
My design incorporates lots of different elements that led to the commission. Grinning Gibbons is most well known for his incredibly realistic foliate wood carvings, so incorporating lots of this felt like an absolute must, I also wanted to include a nod to a famous cravat that he carved, The rams head at the top of the carving is part of the Drapers Company heraldry, something that can be seen again and again throughout the building as well as the drapery carving, also a nod to the drapers company's roots. All of these elements are brought together around the central cartouche, an architectural element that is also repeated again and again both on the outside of the drapers Hall and all around central London.. I liked the way the rams horns mirror the spiral at the bottom of the cartouche.
